Have You ALSO Heard?

[Today's post is by Jay A. Auxt, co-author of Global Warming and the Creator's Plan, published by Master Books.]

In the fall of 2008 I began a 12-session seminar on the sciences that support a biblically based creation. The first session began with a survey of topics. The intent was to meet the needs of the attendees. Out of curiosity, I included the subject of global warming on that topic survey. (Yes, global warming is a creation/evolution-charged subject. The evolutionary ideaology is, “since the earth has been here for billions of years, it must be protected enough to last billions of more years.” Clearly the only way that will happen is if “all of you” get off!) Anyway, much to my surprise, global warming tied for first place, along with dinosaurs. Obviously this subject was of more interest to more people than I had ever imagined!

Global warming is certainly an important issue, but are we getting all the facts?

You have heard:

  • The earth has warmed over the past 100 years
  • The artic ice is melting
  • Ice core data indicates that the earth has been getting warmer for the past 100 years
  • Surface temperature data clearly indicates that the earth is getting warmer
  • As Christians, proper stewardship of God’s creation is crucial

But have you also heard:

  • The international temperature standards were not established until 1968
  • A submarine arctic volcano has recently become very active!
  • The same ice cores indicate that all life as we know it died out multiple times due to cold
  • Upper atmosphere satellite data clearly indicates that the earth is getting colder
  • To do that (steward God’s creation) we need to be accurately informed

Our environment is clearly a subject that concerns conscientious Christians. (As well it should.) As Christians, we do need to be good stewards, but we do not need to be distracted from our mission in life. God has a plan  for each and every one of us. The purpose of this book is not to tell you how to take care of the environment (that is between you and God), but to fill in the gaps with the information necessary to make godly and wise choices.

2 Disconcerting Aspects of Global Warming

[Today's post is by Jay A. Auxt, co-author of Global Warming and the Creator's Plan, published by Master Books.]

The first most concerting aspect of the global warming hype is not the temperature change. The most disconcerting concern I have is how Christians respond to this hype. Of course, we are responsible for caring for the earth. Shame on us all for not being better stewards of His creation. However, as Christians, our actions need to be focused on Christ and His direction for our lives. If the deceiver can sidetrack our actions, he has gained ground. Consequently, our actions (how we serve the Lord) need to be based on truth, not media hype.

The next most concerting aspect of the global warming hype is the side-tracking of non-Christians. Yes, the earth will ultimately be destroyed by global warming, but it will not be a gradual warming. The warming will occur very rapidly – in a single day.

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” (2 Peter 3:10)

It is sad and ironic that more people seem to fear this gradual, so-called “global warming” that is too slight to even be discerned by the human skin rather than the rapid, blazing heat that will instantly engulf them at death if they do not turn to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The last weather and environmental prediction that was 100% accurate was given at the time of Noah. It is fitting that we return to the Biblical forecast to deal with these coming days. God has created this world and has plans for it in the present and the future. No amount of media or political hype can undermine the Word of God or alter our Creator’s Plan. Those who put their trust in Him should never fear the future nor ruin our economic system by trying to cope with this media hype about global warming.

Can You “Feel” Global Warming?

[Today's post is by Jay A. Auxt, co-author of Global Warming and the Creator's Plan, newly published by Master Books.]

It is amazing how many people are absolutely convinced that global warming is occurring. Why is this so amazing? Because most people who are convinced of this warming trend are convinced not by the data, but because they “can feel it.” The temperature of all too many people is obviously “warmer.” How can this be?

Supposedly the earth’s temperature has increased 0.5 degrees over the past 100 years. When we factor in humidity and wind, our flesh cannot “feel” the difference between the supposed 0.5-degree change from one day to the next, never mind over 100 years!

So why are so many people absolutely convinced of this warming trend? Simply because we hear about it in the news practically every day. Consider the following news report: “There are ominous signs that the earth’s weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production – with serious political implications for just about every nation on earth. The drop in food output could begin quite soon, perhaps only 10 years from now.”

This statement was not referring to global warming. It was referring to the coming Ice Age as reported in the April 28, 1975  issue of Newsweek. In the mid ’70s the news media was so focused on “global cooling” that far too many people were absolutely confident that the earth was cooling and truly believed they could “feel it.”

This is not just a technical issue. How we serve our Lord and Savior is affected by how we view our surroundings. We need to be persuaded to walk by “truth,” not by media hype and subjective feelings.

Erroneous Extrapolation?

[Today's post is by Jay A. Auxt, co-author of Global Warming and the Creator's Plan, newly published by Master Books.]

As an engineer, we need to be always working with real world science. In other words, the science and data used to design structures and apparatus needs to work in the real world. Although this seems like mere common sense, it is amazing how often science, for the sake of ideology, totally defies this logic. The concept of “extrapolation” is, perhaps, one of the most often abused techniques for those who would like to deceive. The book [Global Warming and the Creator's Plan] uses the example of two identical thermometers, one at the front door and one at the back door of the house.

“You have two laboratory-grade mercury thermometers, both in the shade, one on the front porch and one on the back porch. You notice that the one on the front porch reads 0.5 degrees higher than the one 50 feet away on the back porch. You want to go to town to pick up the mail and need to know how to dress. Town is nearly 3 miles away – 15,000 feet. You extrapolate this 0.5 degree difference from the front of your house to the rear of the house, 50 feet apart, to a town which is 15,000 feet away. Doing so, you come up with a downtown temperature of T=0.5 x 15,000 divided by 5o and get 150 degrees. Consequently, you can scientifically determine it is 150 degrees warmer in town than at your house!”

Obviously, insignificant errors can cause people to jump to enormously erroneous conclusions when extrapolating these minor errors over long periods of time, or in this case, over long distances.

Global warming is one prime example of  this erroneous extrapolation process. Supposedly, over the past 100 years, the world temperature has increased 0.5 degrees. However, how do we know? Globally recognized standard temperatures were only established 40 years ago and the standard was changed in 1990! The variations in the global temperature measurements are greater than the supposed 0.5 degree increase. With what confidence can that data be extrapolated into the future? If engineers attempted to extrapolate uncertainties of strength of material data to this extent in structural designs, people could be killed!

“Evolutionism Trashed My Life”

[Today's post is by Jay A. Auxt, co-author of Global Warming and the Creator's Plan, newly published by Master Books.]

As an impressionable teenager, evolutionism trashed my life. I confess that I swallowed it hook, line and sinker. Shortly after I was saved (Dec. 21, 1980), I vowed I would never again swallow another “everybody knows” ideology without significant personal investigation. As I began to investigate the contradiction between God’s Word and evolution, it became glaringly clear that society has been duped by bad science, no science, half truths, and just plain ideological hoopla. By the late 1980s, God was using me to share the scientific evidence for His Word on a regular basis.

About 5 years ago it became obvious that the media was using this “everybody knows” tactic to spread their agenda on global warming. What was behind the agenda? Once again, bad science, no science, half truths, and just plain ideological hoopla. As I would speak to different organizations about the fallacies of evolution and the sciences that support God’s Word, I began to receive numerous questions about global warming. To address these questions, I put together a 15-minute presentation that began with a quick 10-question quiz with some of the more blatant misconceptions and then followed the quiz by addressing these 10 myths. It was brief, fun, entertaining, and provided people with enough information to recognize that they should not fall for the old “everybody knows” trick.

However, every presentation generated more questions. It was very clear that, (a) most Christians sincerely want to be good stewards, and (b) they are confused about what that entails. Many had recognized that what they were hearing just didn’t sound quite right, but they couldn’t separate the fact from the fiction with any confidence. Unfortunately, all too many were falling for the global warming myths simply because they didn’t have a balance of information. For a Christian, this is devastating for a variety of reasons. Most importantly, (a) they feel that they have seriously failed their Creator by destroying His greatest tangible gift (the earth), and (b) they shortchange His greatest intangible gift (Jesus Christ) by getting sidetracked from His purpose for their lives! Eventually the presentation grew to 90 minutes and the discussions after the presentation often continued until the lights went down.

About 2 years ago I gave the presentation to the Institute for Scientific and Biblical Research (ISBR) in Lancaster, PA. The discussions continued until the lights went down. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Curtis (a good friend and the president of ISBR) suggested that the 2 of us write a book on the subject. I was very reluctant at first. I did not want to get sidetracked from God’s purpose for my life. That was one of the primary purposes for the presentation! However, with time, it became clear that this was, indeed, God’s will. Dr. Curtis penned the outline and put the process into motion. After working together for 2 years, the product is now available. Dr. Curtis and I pray that God will bless those who read it, and allow them to properly focus on serving Him.

Why the Book?

[Today's post is by Dr. William M. Curtis III, co-author of Global Warming and the Creator's Plan, newly published by Master Books.]

The raison d’etre for writing the book, Global Warming and the Creator’s Plan, stemmed from the fact that people like Al Gore and others have misrepresented the truth and the real future of this planet as defined in God’s Word.

The Institute for Scientific and Biblical Research was founded for the purpose of advocating a literal historic understanding of the Word of God with emphasis on the book of Genesis. The secular world of the 2oth century has been led by evolutionary scientists, atheists, and unbiblical church leaders into a world of falsehoods, false prophets, poor science, evil and environmental panic that Scripture pictures as indicative of “The Last Days.” Before we are all consumed in this scenario, we felt it would be consistent with our calling to write this book when global warming became a media myth. God’s plan for this earth never involved its continual state under the curse of Genesis 3. We are to treat our environment with Christian responsibility, but not lose sight of the fact that God is calling out His family for a new earth whose Builder and Maker is God. With Jay Auxt coming to our board and joining the fight to get the truth out on global warming, we decided in 2006 to co-author the book.
